Lessons In Leadership: My EF Journey

When I first joined EF English First as a full-time ESL teacher, I was focused on one clear goal: helping my students succeed while learning English in an engaging and supportive environment - back then, it was a ‘clock in, clock out’ position. However, the classrooms were lively, the students were full of curiosity, and I was learning just as much from them as they were from me. I quickly realized that teaching at EF wasn’t just about delivering lessons - it was about embracing a philosophy of learning, community, and adaptability.

After settling into the classroom, I transitioned into the Senior Teacher role, working closely with the Director of Studies at the time. This position gave me a front-row seat to the leadership and administrative aspects of running a successful center. I collaborated with fellow teachers and senior staff on a range of projects; everything from refining lesson plans, integrating new pedagogical approaches, to aligning teaching methods across classes. These experiences taught me the importance of balancing innovation with the EF ethos - pushing for effective, research-based teaching strategies while preserving the unique charm and culture that make EF so special.

My growth continued when I stepped into the Associate Director of Studies (Associate DOS or ADOS) role. Here, I took on additional responsibility for teacher mentoring, curriculum alignment, and supporting the operational side of the center. When the DOS left, I transitioned into acting Director of Studies, taking full ownership of the role before my official promotion. This period was both challenging and rewarding. It demanded strategic thinking, quick adaptation, and the ability to lead with empathy and clarity.

Throughout my time as DOS, I prioritized supporting teachers to reach their fullest potential. I conducted classroom walkthroughs, led CPD sessions, and initiated calibration projects to ensure consistency in teaching quality and learning outcomes. Collaboration was at the heart of everything I did; whether it was working with new teachers to refine their classroom practices, partnering with senior teachers on center-wide initiatives, or consulting with colleagues on curriculum improvements. My focus was always on creating an environment where teachers felt confident, supported, and empowered to innovate.

I also had the opportunity to implement various new approaches to teaching and learning, blending inquiry-based methods, differentiation, and Universal Design for Learning strategies before I knew the official terminology for these strategies - all while maintaining the signature EF experience that students and families trust. It was incredibly fulfilling to see these initiatives come to life in the classrooms, enhancing engagement and learning outcomes for students while fostering a culture of professional growth among the teaching team.

Reflecting on my journey, what stands out most is the community - the incredible people I worked alongside, the students who inspired me daily, and the collaborative projects that challenged and excited me. Each step, from ESL teacher to DOS, reinforced the same lesson: leadership in education isn’t about titles; it’s about guiding, supporting, and empowering others to create the best possible learning experiences.

Looking back, I feel proud not only of the roles I’ve held but also of the impact we achieved as a team. From improving academic consistency, mentoring teachers, implementing curriculum innovations, to supporting students’ growth in and out of the classroom, these years shaped me as an educator, a leader, and a lifelong learner.

EF taught me that education is about people, relationships, and continuous growth — and my journey through its ranks gave me the tools, perspective, and confidence to lead with purpose and heart.
